ABOUT THE MAYA ANGELOU TEEN CENTER AT THE ANDREW & WALTER YOUNG FAMILY YMCA.

The Maya Angelou Teen Center, located in Andrew & Walter Young Family YMCA, opened in 2011. It has a performance area and stage, computer lab, reading/study room, cyber café, and boutique. The Dr. Maya Angelou YMCA Teen program is designed to transform teens’ belief systems about their own abilities, their potential to succeed, and their capacity to overcome obstacles by providing them with positive successes on which to build their futures. The program offers training in leadership and personal development, conflict resolution, abstinence and health awareness education, financial/economic empowerment, career readiness, service projects and performing arts.

Since the opening of the Teen Center, Sonjia W. Young has personally mentored dozens of the Maya Angelou Teen Center youth.
